What you should never say when you walk in the house.

I came home and said something I shouldn’t have. Seriously, never walk into a house and say, “This house is a mess, we have to clean it up.” It doesn’t matter how many dishes are in the sink, how many loads of laundry need to be washed/dried/folded, or how many toys are all over the house. I came home and said those words before…and followed it up with “we should set aside a day this weekend to clean the house.” It was like throwing gasoline on my spouse and tossing a match in their direction. If I had thought before those words left my mouth, I would have recognized that he had just made dinner for all of us on “Taco Monday” all from scratch. He had emptied, loaded, and emptied the dishwasher because I hadn’t done it the night before, AND I was home late picking up our kiddo from day care. Having learned from this experience, let me offer you a little advice: There is a winning phrase you can use, and its really simple. “Is there anything I can do to help?” Trust me, your spouse will have a laundry list of things you can help with. And help with a smile! If the suggestion is to fold laundry, or clean dishes, or wash the toilet, do it with a smile.
